Latoya at the New Hair Resolutions Natural Hair Event

Latoya at the New Hair Resolutions Natural
Hair Event

On Saturday, Jan. 19, over 100 women attended “New Hair Resolutions” at Studio 505 in Wilmington, Del.  Organized by Maisia Jackson of the blog, Four Natural Girls, the event included informative workshops, local hair and accessory vendors, and tons of giveaways. Transitioners, new naturals, and seasoned veterans showed up wearing locs, twistouts, puffs, and even straight styles.

“I decided to have an event in hopes of enlightening more women on the health and beauty benefits of returning back to natural hair”, Maisia said. From protective styling to sisterlocks, and zumba and healthy living, the workshop schedule had you covered. Attendees learned  — from stylist, Tamika Lee –how to use styles such as buns and yarn braids to protect their ends from the dry winter hair. For women looking for a natural hair alternative, Jovan Allis, a sisterlock specialist, explained how to start and maintain this unique loc option.  The event was rounded out by a lively Zumba presentation by fitness instructor, Linda Cooperwood.

The highlight of the afternoon was special guest, Jenell Stewart of Kinky Curly Coily Me. Jenell not only had an engaging and informative presentation, but she also conducted one-on-one consultations with attendees. Jenell jokingly shared her misconceptions about natural hair when she first went natural.”I knew that all you needed to do was co-wash, put some gel in there, and you were going to have some popping curls. That’s all you needed to do!  But that’s not how it is for everybody! That’s not how it was for me.” After spending her first year natural chasing curl definition, she embraced her hair texture and learned what styles worked best for her.

The event was sponsored by Shea Moisture, Curls, Miss Jessie’s, Shea Radiance, Karen’s Body Beautiful, Jane Carter Solution, and Jessicurl.  Vendors included; The KnitWit, Lila Rose Hair Gems, Traci Lynn Jewelry, 2LiteCreations, Kbo e’Scentials, and jewelry by Shana Ross.
