dsc4778Natural hair enthusiasts from all over gathered in Houston, Texas for the second Annual Nzuri Natural Hair, Health, and Beauty Showcase. Talking about a great place to meet and talk to other naturals and discuss best practices in caring for natural hair. Little girls flaunting their fros and braided styles were with their mothers enjoying the show, getting their hair done, and trying out new products. Naturalistas were sporting their frohawks, afros, twistouts, buns, twists, and locs.

The show was presented in part by Miss Jessie’s, which is a very popular natural hair care line. The models for Miss Jessie’s were even on hand to give away wonderful bags of samples. There were several events that took place within the showcase. Performances by spoken word artists, R&B selections, dance performances by Kucheza Ngoma and Culture is Couture were some of the highlights of the show. Miss Jessie’s took the stage for a presentation and there was also a Macy’s Fashion show, since Macy’s was also one of the sponsors of the showcase.

The second day of the natural hair show featured gospel performances, a Miss Jessie’s stage presentation, a Fab Over 40 Fashion show, a Hair Fashion Show, the Little Miss “Happy” Headed Beauty Pageant and the Little Mr. “Handsome Man” Pageant. Various vendors handed out “goody” bags and allowed guests to try out the hair products. Walking through the showcase there were a huge variety of products to sample and purchase, from Miss Jessie’s, Taliah Waajid’s Black Earth Products, and Jane Carter to Hick’s Edges and Koils by Nature._DSC0756

Black men (with and without locs) came to support their women and also to become more educated on how to care for their hair as well. Every booth guests went to were a great source of information. Vendors were experts on how to use their products and continuously performed demonstrations and had question and answer sessions. A Nzuri panel discussion on natural hair kept the audience intrigued. Workshops on how to care for your natural hair, how to braid and care for locs were some of the classes and workshops available.

“This is My Beautiful” was the theme of the hair expo. Attendees were also able to meet and talk to some of their favorite YouTube vloggers such as BeautifulBrwnBabyDol and other natural hair bloggers in the “blogosphere.” Some of the bloggers, such as BeautifulBrwnBabyDol conducted their own classes and workshops to share their secrets for growing and caring for their natural hair. There were also plenty of photo opportunities to take pictures with your favorite bloggers, etc. The event was well put together and was a great thing for Houston. This two day expo was chock full of information and entertainment and a must see for first timers and veteran show enthusiasts alike. Hopefully, the next showcase will draw an even larger crowd and before you know it, the biggest, baddest, and best hair show on earth will be in Houston. Watch out Atlanta, Houston is on the map!
